The Role

The Swine Nutritionist will provide nutritional expertise on-farm and in-barn to Connect OnFarm consultants and their customers through innovation, creation, and implementation of their specialized nutritional requirements. You will work closely with brand consultants and their customers to analyze swine nutritional needs based on industry standards and implement feeding strategies to maximize production and reproduction performance. You are a key team member in building customer loyalty while helping COF revolutionize the feed industry in Western Canada.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities 

• Animal nutrition specialist; on-farm and in-barn animal consulting
• Create nutrition programs that are customized to each facility factoring in genetics, available feedstuffs, ventilation systems, water and environment
• Provide hands-on and practical knowledge of animal husbandry management
• Evaluate animal performance record
• Provide regular reports to customers about efficiencies and progress
• Evaluate on-farm feed mills and set up programs to utilize equipment
• Utilize current and new technology to optimize nutritional modelling (ration balancing) to improve our understanding of feed ingredients and feed additives and to support the implementation of monitoring programs which improve the customer’s profitability
• Collaborate closely with the poultry-focused Monogastric Nutritionist to develop custom nutritional solutions for Connect OnFarm customers’ requirements
• Work directly with our consulting nutritionists to provide leading-edge nutrition consultation and value-added management support to progressive monogastric producers
• Work directly with the Procurement and Formulation teams to identify new feed ingredient opportunities and ensure nutritional accuracy within the formulation system
• Prepare and present technical presentations to a broad range of audiences e.g. producers, consulting nutritionists and industry professionals
• Participate in the development of new and innovative nutritional products
• Maintain current knowledge of scientific and industry developments, trends and issues impacting our customers and the feed industry
• Represent the company in a professional manner at trade shows, conferences and scientific meetings
• Develop and maintain relationships with other industry advisors, including veterinarians, and feed ingredient suppliers
• Other duties as assigned

 Skills & Experience Required

• Advanced understanding of swine nutrition and farm management practices
• Positive attitude with outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to create satisfied internal and external customers
• Strong verbal communication skills with the flexibility, diplomacy and adaptability to work with various personality types
• Goal-oriented team player who is open to learning, challenging and improving
• Strong time management and organizational skills
• Display honesty, integrity and a strong sense of ethics in all decisions and actions
• Possess the consultative selling skills required to sell and service monogastric customers
• Resourceful with strategic and analytical capabilities
• Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to establish/maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers
• Self-starter with the ability to work independently and as part of the Connect OnFarm team; you believe in making others more successful
• Flexible, adaptable and able to thrive in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment

 Qualifications include

• BSc or MSc degree in Monogastric Nutrition or Animal Agriculture
• Minimum 3-years’ experience in swine nutrition
• Colony experience an asset
• Experience with swine ration balancing and nutritional modelling
• Feed Formulation experience would be beneficial
• Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications

Role Location

Expected to reside within an area allowing easy access to business facilities and customers (within the Canadian Prairie Provinces)
