Website Boreal Veterinary Centre Specialist and Emergency

Location: Boreal Veterinary Clinic
Shift: 10-hour shifts, 4 days a week (split-week schedule, shifts can start and end between 8 AM to 8 PM)
Reports to: Internal Medicine Team Lead

Prerequisites:

  • Active member of the ABVMA
  • Active member of the ABVTA
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs (22 kg)
  • Ability to be on time and prepared to work at the beginning of your scheduled shift.
  • A desire to grow the RVT profession
  • Willingness to create opportunities for themselves, the hospital, and their patients
  • Intent to share your knowledge and expertise with others to elevate them
  • The ability to provide constructive feedback to your team and Management
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proven problem-solving skills

Summary:

This role is a partnership with veterinarians. Together with the Dr. Cockwill, Dr. Flint, and the Internal medicine team, you will provide gold standard medical care to our patients. As a medical professional, you are expected to contribute your medical expertise to each case, to contribute at rounds and to mentor other members of this team (veterinarians and veterinary students included). All RVTs are encouraged to advocate for themselves and their career.

Essential Job Functions

  • Critical thinking regarding each case
  • Patient assessments
  • Calculating, drawing, and administering oral and injectable medications
  • Supervising and supporting Animal Care Assistants with their patient care
  • Communicating with clients, DVMs and other staff
  • Administering, monitoring, and recovering patients from anesthesia
  • Performing medical procedures as prescribed by the veterinarian
  • Venipuncture and catheter placements
  • Performing laboratory tests
  • Obtaining quality images with Xray, CT or ultrasound
  • Performing advanced diagnostic tests including scopes
  • Managing hospitalized patients, performing recovery care and additional specialized treatments (e.g. Iodine Radiation).
  • Assisting DVMs with appointments
  • Performing tech appointments
  • Triaging patients
  • Performing pharmacy duties
  • Double checking Aftercare for ACA
  • Assisting with quality control of equipment
  • Assisting with maintaining equipment
  • Supporting reception
  • Taking client and non-client communications
  • Mentoring and supporting other members of the veterinary team
  • Contributing suggestions to improve hospital flow and patient care.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate medical records
