Here are a few essential steps to help reduce stress and ensure your pet’s comfort during an emergency evacuation:🔥 Have a Pet Emergency Plan ReadyBefore disaster strikes, make sure you have a clear emergency plan in place for your pets. Check out our past post on how to make an emergency plan for your pets, including identifying evacuation routes and assembling a pet emergency kit.🔥 Bring Familiar Items with YouPack familiar items such as your pet’s bed, toys, or an article of clothing with a familiar smell. These items can offer comfort and reassurance in an unfamiliar environment, helping your pet feel more secure during stressful times.🔥 Use Gentle Handling and Stay Close if PossibleYour pets may feel anxious during an evacuation, so staying as close to them as possible can help them feel safe. Always handle your pet gently to avoid adding stress to an already tense situation.🔥 Provide Treats and Positive ReassuranceOffer treats and positive verbal reassurance to help comfort your pet. During an emergency evacuation, it’s important t

During an emergency evacuation, it’s important to consider what accommodations you may need for you and your pets. Animals can provide vital assistance to people, but they may also require accommodations themselves, whether as service animals or pets with specific health needs. Planning for all aspects of your accommodations is key to being fully prepared for emergencies.

When building your emergency kit, make sure to consider:

✔️ Mobility & accessibility
Pack mobility aids for people and pets, like walkers, ramps, carriers, booties, or harnesses.

✔️ Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Include extra water, nutrition, nursing supplies, and for animals, comfort bedding and care items for expecting or nursing pets.

✔️ Allergies & dietary needs
Allergy-friendly food, treats, and water-safe storage are essential for both humans and animals with sensitivities.

✔️ Medications & chronic conditions
Ensure you have an updated supply of medications for ongoing conditions, for you and your pets. Include vet records and feeding instructions too.

This Emergency Preparedness Week, consider refreshing or updating the supplies in your emergency kit:
✔️ Updated prescriptions and medications needed for travel (for you and your pet)
✔️ Extra leashes, collars, or harnesses – especially important if you need to evacuate quickly
✔️ Non-perishable food and collapsible bowls
✔️ Extra waste bags and/or litter
✔️ Copies of vet records – including vaccinations and microchips
